Why Electrical Matters for HVAC
HVAC equipment is often the largest electrical load in a home. Undersized circuits cause problems; proper installation ensures safety and reliability.
Air Conditioner Electrical Requirements
Central AC typically requires a 240V dedicated circuit. A 2-ton unit might need 15-20 amps; a 5-ton unit could need 40+ amps.
Furnace and Air Handler Power
Gas furnaces need 120V power for controls, blowers, and ignition. Electric furnaces require 240V and much higher amperage—often 60-100 amps.
Heat Pump Considerations
Heat pumps use similar circuits to AC for compressors. Electric backup heat adds significant amperage requirements—check panel capacity.
Electrical Panel Capacity
Older 100-amp panels may not support modern HVAC plus other loads. Panel upgrades ($1,500-$3,000) are sometimes needed for high-efficiency systems.
Signs of Electrical Problems
Tripping breakers, flickering lights when HVAC starts, or warm breakers indicate problems. Call an electrician—these are fire hazards.
